The Metropolitan Section Qualifiers of the Pierce Purcell Shield, organised by Leinster Golf, will be held at Elmgreen on 17th & 18th of May

Five foursome pairings represent each club, comprised of minimum individual handicaps of 12 and minimum combined of 27.

The qualifiers begin on Saturday the 17th of May, with the top four of twelve teams going forward to play on Sunday 18th.

Named after Professor Purcell, one of Ireland's outstanding golf administrators from the 1920s to 1960s, the Pierce Purcell Shield has been a fixture in the GUI tournament calendar since 1970.

This is the second time that we are hosting the qualifiers at Elmgreen - a real vote of confidence in the course and the Club from the GUI and Leinster Golf.

  * Pierce Purcell was professor of civil engineering in UCD from 1909 to 1953. He urged greater involvement of engineers in policy-making for public projects in Ireland and earned national renown through his advocacy of peat fuel development. Purcell was a member of the Industrial Research Council and chairman of the Alliance and Dublin Consumers' Gas Company, and worked on the redesign of Butt Bridge in central Dublin in the early 1930s. Later in his career he was one of the key negotiators in UCD's efforts to secure a new campus. He was also one of the country's leading golf administrators. He died in 1968.
